How to read the cards

Every card carries the grammar you need. Here is what the notation and colours mean.

Card colours

Noun cards are tinted by grammatical gender, and idioms have their own colour:

  • der · masculine
  • die · feminine
  • das · neuter
  • der/die · both forms exist (neutral)
  • idioms & fixed expressions

Cases: + A, + D, + G, + N

Verbs and prepositions show which case their object takes:

  • + A accusative, e.g. unterschätzen + A
  • + D dative, e.g. ausweichen + D
  • + G genitive, e.g. sich bewusst sein + G
  • + N nominative, e.g. gelten als + N

Plural endings

die Wurzel, -n means the plural is die Wurzeln. An umlaut change is marked like der Brauch, -̈e (die Bräuche).

(nur Sg.) = singular only · (nur Pl.) = plural only.
